The cards, made of more or less thick cardboard, were usually illustrated with characters from manga/TV series/movies, or sportsmen (mainly baseball players and sumos). On this menko you can see Kyûka, one of our original characters. It is a kappa (creature from Japanese folklore) and its name comes from the English word “cucumber” (which is pronounced “kyûkanba” when written in katakana) because kappas love cucumbers.
